GENESIS 19

GENESIS 19:4) "But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 5) And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them."

IS HOMOSEXUALITY A SIN?

Marriage between those of the same sex has been legalized. Families with two men or two women as parents has been sanctioned. Our leaders are telling our children that this "lifestyle" is perfectly natural and should be accepted. NOT!!! Then the same leaders go to church and claim to be believers of the Bible! I'm sorry folks, but I just cannot condone this behavior! HOMOSEXUALITY IS WRONG!!! It is more than just wrong, it is a SIN!

We find an ugly picture here in chapter 19. The two angels that visited Abraham with The Lord have gone down to Sodom. Lot sees them and invites them into his home. Verse 4 says that "all the people from every quarter:" "both young and old" gathered around Lot's house and demanded that Lot send out the two visitors "that we may know them." The intent is clear! Lot can be commended for wanting to protect the visitors here but in order to do so, he offered the men his own two daughters! The fact that Lot did this says a lot about the morals of Sodom and also a lot as to his own standards, as well as those of his daughters! Evidently the thoughts which later lead to their incest with their father had been planted long before!

Lot's daughters were saved as the two heavenly beings smote the men outside with blindness. They then told Lot to gather his family together and get out of Sodom for they were going to destroy it! An entire city with less than 10 righteous people! Remember the bargain Abraham had made with God in chapter 18...that if 10 righteous people be found, the city would be spared?

REMEMBER LOT'S WIFE

(The word's of Jesus in LUKE 17:32.)

17) "And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lset thou be comsumed. 24) Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; 26) But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt."

The angels had to actually drag Lot and his wife and daughters out of Sodom. They had become so wrapped up in this city that they didn't want to leave. vs. 16 Says the angels brought him forth and set him outside the city, "The Lord being merciful unto him." Thank God for mercy! The angels told them to escape to the mountain and to not look back. But Lot wanted to stay in the city. He begged the angels to let them go into a little city called Zoar. The angels told him to go quickly for they could not do anything until they were safely out of the way. Even as they went, fire and brimstone was rained down upon Sodom and Gomorrah. But Lot's wife had become so attached to the city, she had to look back! She became a pillar of salt!

Thank God for intercessory prayer. Verse 29 says that "when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow." Don't ever stop praying for your lost friends and loved ones. This is proof of what prayer can do!

A WICKED PLOT

31) "And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 32) Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father."
36) "Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father."

As sad as the above account of humanity is, the last part of the chapter may be even sadder! It tells a story of a contrived plan of incest. Phychiatrists today would have a field day with this "dysfuntional" family!

Whose was the greatest sin, the children or the father? The plan these two girls plotted was certainly sinful but what about Lot's part in it? Becoming drunk was not the greatest sin he committed either, bringing up children in such a sinful place was his greatest sin. His daughters were a product of their environment! Lot brought all this evil upon himself when he chose the plain over the hill country. This proves once again that looks are deceiving!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

1) Why do you think Lot was willing to turn his own two daughters over to the men of the city to save two strangers?

2) One commentary I read said, "Lot was saved because he believed, although his own family proved unfaithful."
Do you think Lot was saved because he believed or because Abraham was interceding for him?
