(GENESIS 1) "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,".
The word heaven is plural in the Hebrew. We find here three different heavens that God created:
The first heaven, which is the home of the birds and clouds, the second heaven, which is
where the sun, moon and stars are, and the third heaven, which is home to the angels, God
Himself and departed saints. On the first day of creation God created light. No one knows
for sure where this light came from. There was light on earth three days before the heavenly
lights were created. There has been much speculation on this light but it remains a mystery.
God then separated the light from the darkness and created day and night. Some people believe
that the first appearance of the Holy Spirit was on the day of Pentecost but notice what verse
2 says: "...And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters". God the Father, God the
Son and God the Holy Spirit were all three very much in evidence at the very beginning of the
earth. In verse 26 God said, "Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness".
I believe the Us and Our in this verse is talking about The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The earth was solid water when first formed. God separated these waters on the second day.
He drew part of the water up into the firmament (sky). On the third day, God caused the
waters on the earth to be gathered together into bodies of water and the dry land appeared.
He then made the plant life to grow on the land. On the fourth day he created the sun to rule
the day and the moon and stars to rule the night, thus giving a new light on earth. Evidently
the former light was not needed anymore at this point in creation. The fifth day the fish and
fowl were brought into existence and on the sixth day all the different species of animals and
man were created.
For memorization purposes, the creation went like this:
1. LIGHT
2. FIRMAMENT
3. DRY LAND, PLANT LIFE
4. SUN, MOON & STARS
5. FISH & FOWL
6. BEAST AND MAN
I want to strongly encourage you to memorize God's amazing creation.
Vs. 27 & 28 says God created male and female and told them to "...Be fruitful, and multiply,
and replenish the earth...". He put man over the earth and all the animals. Man was told to
"subdue" the earth. He was given "every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding
seed" to eat. And to the beasts, fowl and all creeping creatures God gave "every green herb"
to eat. (vs. 29 & 30)
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
1) Where do you think the light God created on the first day came from?
2) Who do you believe inhabits the third heaven?
3) Who do you think God was talking to when He said "Let US make man in OUR image?"
4) God told man (vs.28) to "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth." Do you
think Adam and Eve had children before they were banished from The Garden of Eden?
5) Verse 30 says God gave all the animals green herb for food. Do you think there were any
carnivorous (flesh-eating) animals in The Garden of Eden? If not, where did they come from?
