MATTHEW 4:1 "Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him."

In Matthew 4 we read of the spirit taking Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (Notice Satan did not take Jesus to be tempted, the Spirit took him to be tempted!) Satan first tempted Him with food! (hmmm...Isn't THAT interesting?) He hadn't eaten for forty days so the need and the desire for food was great. But Jesus quoted scripture to him. The second temptation was power. Satan put Jesus on a pinnacle of the temple and tempted Him to call angels to catch Him as He fell, therefore tempting God to intervene. Jesus once again quoted him scripture. The third and final temptation was that of riches, material things. This is probably the most successful temptation Satan has ever used on mankind! Once again, Jesus quoted scripture.

You cannot fight Satan in your own strength. No matter how strong you feel you are or how determined your walk with God is, you do not have the weapons necessary to battle Lucifer. Even Jesus Himself did not attempt to argue with the devil. The only way to overcome the tempter is to quote him the Word of God for God is the only One with power greater than the angel of darkness. There is a scripture for every single thing you have ever been tempted with. Every time you are tempted , search the bible until you find the scripture you need to fight the tempter, then commit that scripture to memory. Quote it to Satan every day. He will flee from you when you do for he cannot stand against the Word of God.

Here are a few scriptures you can use against the tempter.
If you are tempted by:

  • Sex quote Hebrews 13:4
  • Lust quote Romans 1:24-26
  • Sensual pleasure quote I John 2:16
  • Substance abuse quote Proverbs 23:20-21
  • Jealousy/covetousness quote Exodus 20:17
  • X rated TV or literature quote Psalm 101:3
  • Complaining, bitter spirit quote Philippians 2:14-15
  • Hate quote I John 3:15; 4:20-21
These are just a few scriptures you can use against the temptations of Satan. There are many, many more! If you need a scripture to cover something not listed above and can't find one, please write me and I will see if I can find a verse for you.

I hope you all have a great week.
