John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
WHY DID GOD MAKE YOU?
I've heard several preachers say that it is the Christian's job to get lost people saved. But I don't entirely agree with this. I used to feel guilty when a pastor would challenge from the pulpit, "Did you invite anyone to church last week?" Or, "Did you witness to a lost person last week." And some have even gone as far as to say, "If you've never led anyone to Christ, you're not bearing fruit." Now I know these dear men meant well, but they weren't really thinking before they so readily condemned! If we look back to Genesis 1:26 we see that God originally made man to take care of the garden of Eden and he made woman so man would not be lonely. Then Genesis 3:8 suggests that God enjoyed having fellowship with the man and woman He created. Nowhere do you find where God told the people He created that they were responsible for making others believe in Him.
DO YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO PREACH TO OTHERS?
What you will find is scriptures instructing prophets, preachers and apostle/disciples to preach the word to the heathen or unbelievers. Before I go any further with this, let me say please don't get me wrong! I believe if we have a lost friend or loved one and the occasion presents itself, we should witness to them. Also, I am not talking about prayer here but witnessing. I'm talking solely about feeling like it is our job to get the lost in church and saved. That is NOT what God created us for? So...why are we here, anyway?
EXAMINE YOUR MOTIVES
Why do you go to church? Is it so others will see you go and follow your example? Or is it because you love God and want to worship Him? Or is it simply a habit? God wants us to worship Him willingly because we love Him. He wants us to witness when we have an opportunity because we know Him and want to share Him with others - not out of a sense of duty! We were placed here to have fellowship with God and to care for His creation. He gave us a free will to love and serve Him, or not. When we choose to serve Him, He wants our companionship!
ARE YOU TRYING TO BE THE LIGHTHOUSE?
So many times before I have said that we need to let the light of Jesus shine through us but let me liken our roles to the lighthouse. Imagine a lighthouse set on an island with jagged rocks all around. Farther out in the ocean surrounding the island are many reefs. Placed upon each reef is a reflector. As the light from the lighthouse hits the reflectors, ships are warned of the reef and are kept from sinking. Jesus is the lighthouse and Christians are the reflectors. We can't shine without His light. But God does not expect us to run from reef to reef trying to save every ship that comes near the island; that is His job! We are, however, expected to be on our post so when a ship comes near our reef we are ready to relect His light! When John came to bear witness to Jesus Christ, he couldn't reach all the people, he so rightly states that he was not the Light. When Jesus sent the disciples out into the world, they couldn't reach all the people. Even Jesus did not save everyone He came into contact with while here on earth. Everyone you witness to is not going to accept God. Do you start feeling guilty and discouraged when you fail to go out or call people and witness to them? You have a responsibility to present The Savior to the lost around you who are seeking and willing to listen but unless God has called you to the mission field or to another ministry, He does not expect you to run from reef to reef!
PSALM 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
I think we sometimes get so busy trying to save the world we forget to worship! Our souls need restoring daily! Just as a reflector may become dingy and need to be polished, we need to be refreshed with prayer and study and meditation. Take care of yourself before you try to take care of others! Make sure you stay polished and ready to reflect the Light. If you haven't spent any time with the Savior and had your "soul restored" how can you share Him with those around you?
