JOSHUA 7:10 "And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? 11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. 12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you."

JOSHUA 7:19 "And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me. 20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done: 21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it. 23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD. 24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor. 25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones."

In the scripture above, Achan had fallen into the trap of covetousness. God had forbidden the Israelites to take anything from Jericho but Achan saw some stuff he felt like he just had to have! This lust for stuff caused Israel to lose a battle with their enemies and cost Achan his life.

No matter how much stuff we have, we always want more stuff. I was cleaning out closets last week and I was amazed at all the stuff packed in the back of my closets and on my shelves. Where did all this stuff come from? I realized that it was an accumulation of things bought and forgotton over the years but, goodness so much stuff! As I sorted out and threw away junk, I started thinking about all the junk that accumulates in our minds as we travel through the years. Every so often we need to do some spring cleaning!

MATTHEW 12:43 "When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first."

Do you have resentments against others that you have built up over the years? I think we probably all do. We need to let these go...sweep them out of our lives. They only grow larger as they sit in the closets of our minds and take up more space and use up more energy! Don't let resentment, hate, envy and strife clutter up your mind and spirit. Free yourself from the unneeded stuff in your life! Take all that unneeded stuff and give it to Jesus. He knows just what to do with it! But, be sure to put something else back in place of all the stuff you sweep out! Now that my closets are cleaned out, I have room for more stuff! But I don't want to go out and spend money on more junk to replace the junk I just threw out! When we clean out the junk of the world from our minds, we need to replace it with prayer, devotions and praise of God. When we break away from our old friends, we need to replace them with new Christian friends. When we throw out our old books and tapes, we need to replace them with Christian literature and music. If we don't develop new, improved habits to take the place of the old ways we will fall into the trap of going back to our old ways again. (Just like I'm tempted to buy more stuff to fill my closets and shelves back up!)

Maybe you need to reevaluate your life. Where have you been, where are you headed and where are you now? What kind of unnecessary hostilities and feelings are you hanging on to that are hindering your progress? With so much junk stuffed into your closet it is hard to store anything new there!
