I PETER 2:9 "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:"

What does it mean to be peculiar or different? There are those who believe the way a Christian dresses or wears his hair makes him peculiar and different from the world. There was something about Jesus that set Him apart from other men. He was different but I can't imagine that it was the way He wore His clothes. It couldn't have been the car He drove or the house He lived in. I know some people who major on the outward things. They have a book of wrongs. They concentrate so much on what they wear, what they eat, the things they can't do and the places they can't go that I think they sometimes forget the most important aspect of being a Christian. What made Jesus Christ a peculiar person? What made him different to the world? It wasn't His long hair, his beard or his clothes. It wasn't what He ate or where He lived or even where He went to Church! He was holy! The word holy scares a lot of us but if we are truly children of God then Peter says we are chosen, peculiar, royal and holy!

After a Christian has spent five or ten minutes talking to a stranger, it should be clear to the other person that he is talking to a child of God. Christians must be different from the world. We are called peculiar because our talk is clean, we don't lie, cheat or steal, we don't spread gossip and since we constantly have our minds on heavenly things, it is hard to be in conversation with someone for ten minutes and not praise God in some way! Non-Christians don't look at where we live, what chuch we attend or even how we dress (as long as we are decent!) They are watching how we conduct ourselves, though!

Have you ever heard someone speaking loudly in a restaurant or store and you could tell right away that they were not a Christian by their unholy language? Christians should be quiet mannered, soft spoken and gracious. We are to be different and should practice being kind and loving, even to the unlovable. Peter tells us in I Peter 2:9 that we are chosen, royal, holy and peculiar so that we can show forth the praises of Him who hath called us out of darkness into His marvellous light. That is what makes us different. We have the light of God and the Scripture shining from us. We are a bright spot in a dark world. Go forth and let your light shine. Dare to be peculiar!

I have been chosen; I'm special you see.
Adopted by a Royal Family!
I'm not the same, I've changed drastically,
Since I've been adopted by Royality!
All my friends noticed the change in me.
They say I'm peculiar, I say, I should be!

We should practice our Christianity every day. It isn't always easy to be sweet and soft spoken in a hard, bitter world. But we have been adopted by a King and should, therefore, act like royality!
