Ephesians 611 "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles
of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness
in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."
Last week we geared up to climb the mountain of God. We added some things to our gospel
closets to help us stand against the devil. But what do we really need these things for if we
are not going to stand for anything or stand against anything? Now I know
everybody can't picket abortion clinics, nor does everyone have time to go to Washington and
lobby for stricter drug laws. But we can all stand up for basic bible principles in
our own circle. Are you ashamed to pray in public? Have your children or your friends ever
heard you say a table grace? Have you ever gone to a council meeting when a new business in
your area was seeking a liquor license? Have you ever gone to the polls and voted for local
officials who you know go to church and will stand for what is right? What kind of TV shows
and movies do you allow your children to watch? Do you laugh at dirty jokes at work? And
what kind of language do you use? You cannot make a difference in the world around you if you
never take a stand for anything!
When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was
expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction
and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good" but that is exactly
what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism;
We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism;
We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle;
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare;
We have killed our unborn and called it choice;
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable;
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem;
We have abused power and called it politics;
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition;
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression;
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center of Your will,
and we ask it in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen."
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest.
In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000
phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving
international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa, and Korea. Commentator
Paul Harvey aired this prayer on "The Rest of the Story" on the radio and received a larger
response to this program than any other he has ever aired.
I hope this devotion and this prayer will encourage you to STAND UP and be counted for
Jesus, for if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything!
I hope you all have a wonderful week next week as you look for ways to stand up for what you
