A garden takes a lot of time and a lot of work. First you must
work up the ground, then plant the seeds, but that is just the beginning. The new plants must
be watered and pruned and you must weed them regularly.
II TIMOTHY 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
First, we must read and study God's word. We expect a child to learn as they grow and the Christian life is no different. We need to learn as much about God and what He expects of us as we can and the best way to do this is to read and study His life manual: The Bible.
I THESSALONIANS 5:17
Pray without ceasing.
Another thing a Christian life needs is prayer. How can we say we know and love someone when we never communicate with them? And by prayer I don't mean just asking God for something. I'm talking about a deep, heartfelt conversation. Daniel prayed three times a day and when his life was threatened because of his devotion time, he still prayed three times a day! You will find that all the great men of God spent a lot of time in prayer. And if you really want to have power with God, you will, too!
HEBREWS 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
And, finally, we need Christian fellowship.
Without the fellowship of other children of God, we will slip back into our worldly habits.
Do you attend church? If not, you need to start! The more you stay away from these things,
the further you slip away from God. We need renewal every week, and we can't get that at the
lake or in the mountains! We need worship and we need Christian fellowship.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT"Sometimes I feel like I'm not really a Christian," a teenage girl complained to her mother. "I don't have the same feelings that I had when I joined the church. It is hard for me to remember God!"
The girls mother asked her about a time when her dad had been away on a long business trip. "Was it hard to remember Daddy then?" she asked. "No, not all all," the young girl replied. "He sent me postcards and I talked to him on the phone several times a week. I was looking forward to when he came home!"
The girl's mother asked, "What if there had been no letters and Daddy hadn't called and we hadn't talked about him coming home, though?"
"Well, that would have made a big difference, I guess," she replied. Then she understood what her mother was trying to tell her. God has given us His Word and a meeting place where we can go and talk to Him and about Him. We need these reminders or we will forget God. If Satan can deceive us into believing that our devotion time is not important, he can draw us away from God!
I PETER 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
