Matthew:7:13 "Enter ye in at the strait gate:
for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be
which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto
life, and few there be that find it."
Some believe heaven is a state of being,
others think it is just becoming one with God or one with the universe,
and many more feel that there is no heaven; when we die we cease to exist.
Heaven is a real place and so is hell. They exist today in a different realm just as
sure as the earth exists! In Revelation 21 we are told the length, breadth and height of the
city of Jerusalem decending out of heaven is foursquare so heaven is a real place with exact
dimensions. In John 14 Jesus said he has gone to prepare a place for us. We were meant to go
to heaven so why are there so many who do not find the way?
There are many
references to heaven and hell in the Bible but the ones that caught my attention this week
were the ones that speak of the gates. The bible says the gate to hell is wide and the
way is broad and many go in thereat but the gate to heaven is straight and the way is narrow
and few there be that find it. As I pondered on this, I wondered why the gate to hell is so
easy to find and so few people discover the gate to heaven. After thinking about it for awhile,
I came to the conclusion that all it really boils down to is determination and commitment.
Anything worthwhile takes determination and commitment to attain while you really don't have
to do anything if you are going nowhere! To pass through the gates of hell, all you really
have to do is put your life on cruise, lay back and have a fun ride. But if you are searching
for something better, you must be determined to reach higher and committed to walking the
Let's examine Matthew 7:13 & 14. The gate is said to be straight.
The word straight means: extending continuously in the same direction without curving.
There are no bends or deviations in the route to heaven. We go through the blood of Jesus
Christ or not at all! Many seek another way but all other roads lead to destruction.
In Matthew 7:13 & 14 the way is said to be narrow. One of the meanings of the word narrow is:
rigid or lacking flexibility. Perhaps this is one reason so many give up before
reaching heaven's gate. The way to heaven is not flexible. The word cannot be bent to suit
our desires. Contrary to the way to heaven, the way to hell is said to be broad and the gate
is wide. Hell is easy to find and the way is spacious enough for all who detour from the path
If heaven is your goal, you must search out the way and then stay on the
path. There is only one way to heaven. James Applewhite and his followers thought they were
going to be whisked away to Heaven's Gate by a spacecraft on the tail of the Hale-Bopp
comet but I'm afraid they all followed the broad way that led to the wide gate and destruction.
Jacob supposed he had stumbled upon the gate to heaven (Genesis 28:17) but you can't
stumble into heaven, although I believe millions do stumble into hell and have
no idea how they got there. Satan uses trickery to get people into hell. He will use anything
he can to keep you from finding the narrow way to heaven but Matthew 16:18 says the gates of
hell shall not prevail against the Church of Jesus Christ!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Where is your life going? What is it you are trying to accomplish?
Anything that you are doing that is not getting you closer to heaven's gate is just a waste
of time. This life will be over soon but your soul will dwell somewhere for eternity!
My prayer for you this week is that you will move farther up the narrow way that
leads to life and draw closer to the strait gate!
