Psalm 89:1
" I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations."
Psalm 81:1-3
"1 Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.
2 Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.
3 Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day."
Proverbs 29:6 "In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice."
Do you have a song on your heart? As I looked for scripture about singing there were too many
to choose from and not near enough room to print them all. Just the word sing alone
appears nearly 100 times. When the children of Israel defeated Pharaoh's army at the Red Sea,
they sang a song. When Deborah and Barak defeated Jabin's army in Judges, they sang a song.
Psalm 92:1 says, "It is a good thing to give thanks unto The Lord!" Verse three goes on to
say we should use instruments of strings in our praise to God. The point is to make music. Some
are against using instruments in worship but I believe God enjoys hearing praise to Him in song
and with the sound of musical instruments. I believe if it pleased Him in the days of the Old
Testament it still pleases Him today. Colossians 3:16 says: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your
hearts to the Lord."
I have several songs that are favorite praise songs and I like to sing them to
The Lord. It doesn't matter that they are the same words sung over and over. It's what I am
feeling in my heart as I sing the words that matters. Psalms 100 tells us we are to "Enter into
his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his
name." God loves to be praised; He wants us to "serve Him with gladness" and to
"come before His presence with singing."
20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood
and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established;
believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD,
and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy
endureth for ever. 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon,
Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood
up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of
Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked
unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped."
In 2 Chronicles 20 someone came and told Jehoshaphat that Moab and Ammon, a great multitude, were
coming up against Judah. Judah gathered together to ask help of The Lord. The Spirit of The
Lord came upon one of the Levites and he told them that the next day they were to go down against
them but they were not to fight. He said "the battle is not yours, but God's. Ye shall
not need to fight in this battle." I found it particularly interesting that Jehoshaphat
appointed singers to praise The Lord for His mercy before the battle began. Then as soon as the
singers began singing The Lord caused the enemy armies to turn on one another and "every one
helped to destroy another." Jehoshaphat intended to show his total reliance on God by having
his singers sing praise to The Lord. They were praising God for His mercy before the battle
was won.
Have you ever sung songs of praise when you were down and depressed? You'd be surprised how good
it makes you feel. The next time you feel down in the dumps try putting a gospel tape in your
tape deck. If you have a favorite song, memorize the words to it. Even if you can't sing, you
can chant the words to it. God doesn't care if you can carry a tune or not!
Revelation 15:1-3
"1 And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up
the wrath of God. 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast,
and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.
3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are
thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints."
I hope you like music and singing because there will be singing and harps in heaven!
Not just on Thanksgiving but let's make it a habit to keep a song on our hearts to the Lord every
day of the year. Memorize a favorite hymn, a favorite psalm and sing them in your heart to The
Lord in praise and thanksgiving as you go about your day. Not only will you be pleasing Him but
you will find it uplifting you as well!
I WILL SING OF THE MERCIES OF THE LORD FOREVER
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever:
I will sing, I will sing
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever:
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD.
With my mouth will I make known
Thy faithfulness, Thy faithfulness
With my mouth will I make known
Thy faithfulness to all generations.
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever:
I will sing, I will sing
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever:
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD.
