Leviticus 18:1-5 "And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God. After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances. Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD."
I have watched little children play before and can usually pick out the "boss" fairly
quickly! There is always one child who thinks everyone else should play what they
want to play. Now and then, though, I'll find a child who does not lead easily. This is the
child who will eventually say, "You're not the boss of me!" One thing that is wrong with our
country today is that many children do not know who is the boss of them. They are allowed
to do pretty much what they please most of the time. They watch whatever they want on TV, they
talk as long as they want on the phone, they go wherever they want whenever they want
and choose their own friends. I remember one day I was teaching fifth-grade at a local
elementary school. I had one child who had tried my patience way beyond endurance that day.
I finally told him that if he didn't straighten up I was going to call his dad to come get him.
I'll never forget his reply! He said, "Good, if Dad comes and gets me I'll get to go home and
ride my four-wheeler!" I was speechless. This child was out of control because he didn't fear
anyone or anything! He knew there would not be any retribution or punishment for his bad
behavior so he could just do and say whatever he wanted. He did go home that day because I
refused to put up with his behavior!
"After the doings of the land of Egypt, shall ye not do!" So, this was just for
the Israelites and not for us today, right? After all, we've never even been to Egypt.
But, The land of Egypt represents the world today. There are so many things of
the world that God does not want Christians participating in. We have to live in the
world but we don't have to partake of the world. God is trying to separate His people
from the influence of Egypt. He brought them out of Egypt but they had lived there all their
lives and the customs and worship of the Egyptians was all they knew. They were going to a new
land, Canaan, which was, if possible, even worse than Egypt. It would be so easy for them to
continue living the way they had been and even adopting new customs from the Canaanites.
God is giving them rules and regulations
to live by now, while they are in the wilderness between Egypt and Canaan. They were no longer
in Egypt, they no longer had taskmasters over them making them work every day. They
had a loving God who had brought them out of a sinful, wicked land and wanted them to have
freedom and a new life free from sin and strife. This is exactly what happens to us when we are
saved. We are set free from the sin that held us prisoner. We have a new BOSS. He
loves us and wants us to have a good, clean, happy life! But we must never forget that
He is Lord!
WE MUST NEVER FORGET
