SCRIPTURE READING MATTHEW 6:25-33
Matt. 6:34 "Take therefore no thought for the morrow:
for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the
evil thereof."
We've all heard the story about "Chicken Little". We may even have
laughed at the poor, foolish little chicken who, after being hit on the head by an acorn, ran
around telling everyone the sky was falling. Most of us, however, at some time in our lives,
have behaved exactly like Chicken Little.
Have you ever worried about something that
never came to pass? Of course you have, we all have! Wouldn't it be great to live a life
free of unnecessary worry? Well, I have good news. The Christian life can be worry free.
Now understand, I am not talking about concern for others' health or safety. Nor am I speaking
of a parent's anxiety when a child does not come home on time. I am talking about excessive,
unnecessary worry about things that may never come to pass and, also, about things you cannot
change.
There are so many things to worry about today. I used to be one of those people who obsessed
about every little thing. I would spend the whole day worrying about what I would do if this or
that happened. I finally realized that God had complete control of my life (and of the rest of
the universe as well) and that what would be would be. Now when something happens that I don't have
any control over I just take it to Him and leave it there. (I still catch myself sometimes, though,
wanting to go back and pick that worry up!) I think it is just human nature to worry about things.
We worry about everything from our children's crooked teeth to the weather outside. The crooked
teeth we can have fixed but if it is going to rain there is nothing we can do but roll up the car
windows and bring in the cat!
When you catch yourself worrying about something, ask yourself these two
questions: 1) Can I do anything about it? 2) Will it make any difference ten years from now?
If you answered "no" to either of these questions, chances are you are worrying unnecessarily.
You need to turn your problem over to God and let HIM worry about it. One thing that helps me
is to write the problem down on a piece of paper and commend it to God by simply putting it
away in a drawer for awhile. I'm usually surprised at how small and insignificant it seems
when I come back to it later. (And most of the time the problem has resolved itself by the time
I come back to it!) I'm sure Chicken Little was surprised at how small the sky was
when he discovered it was only an acorn!
IF THE SKY IS FALLING
If the sky is falling, what is that to me?
The universe and elements all belong to Thee.
You can take us up, let us down, or leave us be.
So if the sky is falling, it doesn't worry me!
Make a list of all the things you were worried about last year! You probably can't even
remember everything! Go back over your list and mark off the things that never came to pass. If
you are keeping a journal, flip over to the last page and write "Worry List" at the top. Every
time you find yourself worrying about something, add it to this list and then give it to God.
