MATTHEW 5:4 "Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth."
I heard one opinion recently that this verse could mean that a person who is always agreeable
or affable is more apt to gain earthly riches. Such as a business man with the motto: the
customer is always right. I don't agree with this view.
Being meek does not mean that you have to be weak. You can stand up for Christian values,
protect your loved ones when they are in danger and even go off and fight in times of war and
still be meek. Moses was a meek person but he killed an Egyptian, stood up to The Pharaoh of
Egypt against insurmountable odds, and was so angry at the children of Israel he broke the
first tablets containing the ten commandments. Jesus was meek, but He was so angry with the
money changers in the temple taking advantage of the people, He drove them out with a whip.
The meek are not cowardly, they are simply those who have completely submitted themselves to
God and are gentle toward others. The meek are not easily provoked. They are not easily
aroused to anger. They are quiet and always ready to give a soft answer to an angry person.
A meek person remains cool when others are hot; they keep their heads and composure. They are
quick to forgive and do not seek revenge.
PSALM 37:11 "The meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance
of peace."
The meek will be filled with a peacefulness that only a meek, quiet, patient person can know.
They are truly blessed for only the meek can live a comfortable, peaceful life in a world
filled with hate and anger. Jesus must have been thinking of the thirty-seventh Psalm when he
spoke the third beatitude. It tells us not to fret over evildoers for they shall be cut down.
Does it seem to you at times that the 'evildoers' have 'inherited' the earth today?
That is how it seems to me sometimes. It seems to me that the wicked work less and have more!
But in Psalm 37, we are told that they shall be cut off while, if we wait on the Lord, we
will inherit the earth. But we must be patient. We are not going to inherit the earth
tomorrow! (Unless Jesus comes!)
Psalm 37:10 "For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. 12 The wicked plotteth
against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. 13 The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming."
We are also told that their sword will enter their own heart and their arms will be broken. Verse
16 says the little that we have is better than their many riches. But verse 29 says, "The
righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever."
Psalm 37:34 "Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off,
thou shalt see it."
Would your friends describe you as a meek person? Meekness is something that we quite often
have to work at but it can be an aquired state in time. The next time you are tempted to anger,
count to ten and hold your tongue. If you are angry, remain quiet and calm until you can
speak softly. Meekness is a trait worth working for!
I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK!
