Deuteronomy 4:5-8 "5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. 6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. 7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? 8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?"
While I realize that not everyone who follows my devotions is from the United States, I must still address the recent attack on the "Pledge of Allegiance" to our nation's flag. (June-July 2002) "I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Like most people, I tend to talk about the things that concern me most and this ruling
really concerns me! As most of you already know, A Federal Appeals Court Panel in San Francisco declared
that having school children in nine western states say the Pledge of Allegiance to the American
Flag in school was unconstitutional because the words "One nation under God" were added
in 1954. These words were added in 1954 because our leaders wanted to distinguish The United
States of America from "Godless" countries around the world. While this ruling by the
Federal Appeals Court did not affect the school children where I live, it did affect
the school children in one-fifth of our nation. Imagine telling one-fifth of the children in the
United States that the words they have memorized and have been reciting in the classroom for years
while facing their beloved flag with their hand over their hearts were unconstitutional!
