How important is your name? Your given name at birth is the one people will know you by the rest of your life but you will also be known by other names. Sometimes the names we are dubbed in our youth stick throughout adulthood, even though we change. Every classroom has a fat Albert, a nerd and a bully, and we are always surprised when we see them again at a class reunion and the fat Albert is thin, the nerd is wearing contacts and muscles and the bully is accompanied by a domineering wife.

There are many adjectives we use to describe others. A few of them are: sweet, honest, cheapskate, extravagant, good, kind, cheat, promiscuous, stubborn, easygoing, loyal, faithful, sunny, hateful, sour, bitter, know-it-all, smart-aleck, bossy, and of course the one we probably all use the most, stupid. I'm sure you can think of someone who fits each one of these adjectives. What I want you to ask yourself this week is what adjectives best describe you? Are you a shopaholic or are you a penny-pincher? Are you a workaholic or a couch potato? Would others describe you as neat or messy?

Ask someone you know to use one or two adjectives to describe you. If you are projecting an image to others that you don't like, you can change that image. For one thing, if you are a moody person you probably often let your bad mood control your attitude when talking to others. You must learn to smile, even when you are having a bad day. Remember the commercial slogan, "Sure you have a headache but don't take it out on me?" Well, that is often exactly what we do. We take out our bad mood on those around us and become labeled a grouch or bad tempered. So watch how you may be coming across to others, for many times it is not the image you would like to project!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Ideally, we would want to project the image of Christ to others but we aren't always Christlike. A good name is something to be coveted. It is something we should all try to attain. I have heard many people say, "I don't care what they think about me." Only a foolish person would say that and really meant it! What others think about us is very important. What do people say about you behind your back? Do they give you a good name? We should strive to live our lives beyond reproach and earn a good name for ourselves. After all, we are disciples of Christ and ambassadors to Heaven!

JUST REMEMBER, WHEN YOU DIE YOUR NAME IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU LEAVE BEHIND!
